STNH 17: Hayley Dawson – The Rural Naturopath

Following on from last week’s episode with Jody Vassallo and Farmer – The Cookbook, we are keeping a rural theme… this time focusing on something that’s incredibly important – the health and wellbeing of our farmers. If ever there was a niche that was sooooo needed in Australia right now, this episode’s guest has definitely found it. When I came across her work recently I was like “OMG, of course! Thank god for this human!”

Meet Hayley Dawson – a naturopath who works with people living in remote and rural areas, people who don’t have access to naturopathic care, and get this… she even has a program that’s just for farmers!

STNH 16: Jody Vassallo – Farmer The Cookbook

16.png

This episode is soooo important if you are looking for meaningful gifts this Christmas (or if you just want to treat yourself and give back at the same time!). Jody Vassallo has some mad skills when it comes to creating healthy recipes. She’s worked with everyone from Donna Hay to the Jamie Oliver franchise, and there’s every chance that if you’ve bought a recipe book in the last 20 years, you’ve seen recipes that have been developed by her or styled by her.

BUT… That’s not even why I’ve invited her on the show! You know… sometimes you come across someone who is just a bloody good human. And Jody is also one of the most generous and giving people I know. When times are tough she steps it up, gathers her people and launches into action. Recently the drought in many rural areas of Australia escalated to a point where farmers were undergoing unprecedented grief and suffering. And she saw an opportunity.

And so Farmer – The Cookbook was born – a fundraising effort that will honestly knock your socks off.

STNH 15: Dr Carrie Jones – Hormones, cortisol and why we’re so broken

15.png

Today’s guest is someone that I only recently discovered when watching some seminars online… but when I came across her, I was hooked! She boils the hard stuff down to make it easy, her talks are super relatable, and dare I say it, maybe even a little bit entertaining. Yep – she’s my new functional medicine nerdy girl crush.

She’s also the Clinical Medical Director of Precision Analytical, a company that does some pretty cool functional medicine testing including the DUTCH test and the cortisol awakening response. So of course I did what any nerdy girl would do – I asked her to come on the show so that I can pick her brain about her zones of genius – women’s hormones, adrenals, and functional testing.

Yep, we’re getting into the technical stuff today – so grab a pen and paper, strap yourself in, and soak up the wisdom that is Dr Carrie Jones.

STNH 13: Tara Nelson – Why so many thyroid disorders are going undiscovered and poorly treated

13.png

“Every cell and tissue in the body requires thyroid hormone. So it’s massive.”

Meet Tara Nelson, an outspoken and passionate naturopath who wants to set you straight on thyroid disorders. Tara is based in Western Australia with over 24 years of clinical experience. After many years of seeing loads of thyroid conditions in her clinic, she went into research further education in order to create better outcomes in her most complex patients. She has gone on to write a thyroid recovery program she shares online and with her patients, and she also offers a 6 week online practitioner thyroid training program which she runs twice a year to educate practitioners in thyroid health.

But most of all she is on a mission to bring awareness and education to the public and practitioner community alike about the importance of thyroid health on a deeper level.

STNH 11: Live from the Bioceuticals Symposium – Dr Jay Lombard

“Dr. Lombard is part Sherlock Holmes part Sigmund Freud.”

-Jay Walker, Founder of Ted Med

Dr Jay Lombard is a forward-thinking neurologist like no other… and a trailblazer in the field of integrative neuropsychiatry. His curiosity and tenacity, combined with a heartfelt compassion for his patients, is widely respected throughout the integrative medical community.

In this episode we talk about integrative medical interventions for neurodegenerative conditions like ALS (Lou Gehrig’s disease), schizophrenia, Parkinson’s disease and Alzheimer’s disease.

“Medications in general, particularly in psychiatry, are purely symptomatic – I mean that they’re not addressing the cause of a psychiatric problem, they’re basically just addressing an effect. At best, these medications only alleviate symptoms, so I think that we need to be open to what meds can do and what they can’t do. And what they can cause as problems as well. Which is why we need a collaborative integration.”

Can I get a HELL YES?!

“Everybody knows a cancer survivor… Nobody knows an Alzheimer’s survivor.” Meet Dr Dale Bredesen, an internationally-recognized expert in the mechanisms of neurodegenerative diseases, Dr Bredesen’s career has been guided by a simple idea: that Alzheimer’s as we know it is not just preventable, but reversible. Dr. Bredesen’s research explores previously uncharted territory in explaining the physical mechanism behind the erosion of memory seen in Alzheimer’s disease, and has opened the door to new approaches to treatment.

Tune in and find out more as we look at the cutting edge of Alzheimer’s research, and come away with hope that there IS something we can all do to reduce our risk.

STNH 9: Live from the Bioceuticals Symposium – Dr Albert Mensah

First, they deny it. Then they reject it. Then they accept it. Then they claim it. “We are in a medical renaissance. In the next five years, there’s going to be tremendous opposition.” When interviewing guests for my podcast, there have been a couple of “pinch me” moments where I’ve sat down with someone who’s actually a MASSIVE deal to me. Someone I’ve looked up to for being a trailblazer and leader in the industry.

Dr Albert Mensah is the co-founder of Mensah Medical in Warrenville, IL, USA. Dr. Mensah has extensive clinical experience in biochemical imbalances, and began his career in the field at the former Pfeiffer Treatment Center under the direction of William J. Walsh, PhD, president of the non-profit Walsh Research Institute (if anyone knows me well, they’ll know that I consider this institute to be the absolute leader in the world for pyroluria/pyrrole disorder). Dr. Mensah presents at conferences internationally, participates in physician training programs, and consults with health care professionals, and he currently serves as a faculty member of the Walsh Research Institute Medical Practitioner Education Program.

Yep, this is one powerful, tell-it-like-it-is interview, and an insight into what’s possible for medicine if we all keep an open mind.

STNH 8: Monica Kade – How I ended the battle with my body

8.png

This episode comes with a trigger warning – we will be talking about topics like anorexia, bulimia and mental health.

Monica Kade is a writer and podcaster who has been featured in some major websites and publications. But her most recent achievement is a much more personal affair. You see, she has recently released a book that is all about her fight with poor body image, self-judgement, and eating disorders.

This is a very important topic, so this episode is a must for not only all women, but also anyone who has a daughter.

STNH 7: Sharon Collon – ADD/ADHD and The Functional Family

7.png

Meet Sharon Collon – she’s been a naturopathic client of mine for quite some time. I’ve watched her go through a lot with her own health issues whilst also caring for her family. But she’s been thrown a few extra challenges. You see, a couple of the members of her household have ADHD.

Like any good mum, she tried everything under the sun to help her family, including the GAPS diet, wholefoods, paleo, the RPAH diet, and countless doctors and health practitioners. But what she ended up finding worked the best was developing systems and routines in her household that created calmness and eased overwhelm.

This podcast will give you a new perspective on ADD/ADHD – and how to work with it, rather than battling against it.

“Our aim is to bring back joy for families that are struggling under the pressures of family life.”

Sharon’s new course “Calming the Chaos” is out now, and is perfect for families struggling with ADD/ADHD. Click here to find out more.

STNH 6: Kristy-Lee Rackham – My Holistic Nurse

Meet Kristy-Lee Rackham – a holistic Registered Nurse based in the Noosa Shire in Queensland. She’s also an Energy Coach and multi-modality practitioner who helps people get lasting relief from stress, anxiety and chronic pain without medication.

Kristy-Lee’s superpower is being able to talk about both science and energy medicine in equal amounts, without the two paradigms contradicting each other. I love that.

She’s been through Postnatal Depression and Post Traumatic Stress Disorder, so she also has a first hand insight on how it feels to not only be unwell and out of balance, but to have an invisible illness that others can’t see or sometimes even understand. She also comes from a corporate background as an advertising executive, so she knows what it’s like to be a driven, busy, stressed out women.

Please note: There is a trigger alert with this episode as we discuss some heavy subjects like depression and suicide. If you need support or assistance, please know that you can call Lifeline on 13 11 14, or visit Beyond Blue at http://beyondblue.org.au.

STNH 5: Alysha Habgood – Breast Implant Illness

5.png

Meet Alysha Habgood, a Sydney naturopath who recently had her breast implants removed due to Breast Implant Illness (BII).

With thousands of breast augmentation surgeries being performed in Australia (and hundreds of thousands more around the world) each year, there is a growing concern that many of the implants are becoming toxic. Thousands of women are reporting autoimmune-like symptoms, including joint pain, inflammation, thyroid issues, hormonal imbalances, and debilitating fatigue. Meanwhile, some medical practitioners (and breast implant producers) are holding fast and saying that these issues are NOT caused by the implants… but that tide is turning.

Listen to Alysha’s story and decide for yourself.

STNH 3: Chara Caruthers – Eat like you love yourself

3.jpg

Chara Caruthers has been on my podcast before. You may remember her from episode 21 of Shiny Healthy You when we spoke about Ayurveda, eating for your dosha (or body type), and detoxification.

Chara is a yoga teacher, yoga therapist, Ayurvedic practitioner, recipe developer, all round great cook, and a very good friend of mine.

I’ve got her back in because there’s so much more to this woman, so one episode was never going to be enough. Since our last interview she’s been busy in the kitchen, creating an exciting recipe book called Eat Like You Love Yourself. (Can you believe no one has thought of this title before?)

STNH 2: Jules Galloway (Wellbeing Weekly) – On adrenal fatigue, burnout and self-care

This week we’re lucky enough to have been gifted a bonus episode. A while back, I was interviewed by Michelle Kerr from Wellbeing Weekly, and it was so much fun! She has generously offered to let me share the episode on my own podcast feed.

In this episode I share parts of my own health journey – Find out why living a “work hard, play hard” lifestyle led to burnout, why taking loads of herbs and supplements didn’t help, and how I discovered some quirky health issues that were the key to getting better. Listen to the story of my road to recovery, and what I learned along the way.

So sit back, relax and enjoy this chat, where the tables are turned and I’m on the other side of the questions for a change.

So welcome to Straight Talking Natural Health, the no-BS, tell-it-like-it-is wellness show for busy women, brought to you by a qualified naturopath and functional medicine practitioner (that’s me!).
